Grandma Lo-Fi – German Film Premiere

It’s never too late to start doing what you want to do!
We are very much looking forward to a cinematic tribute to a special artist and her boundless creativity. Grandma Lo-Fi: At the age of 70, Sigrídur Níelsdóttir started recording and releasing her own music – straight from her living room. Seven years later, she had 59 albums to her name with more than 600 songs: a unique collection of peculiar and catchy compositions mixing in various kitchen utensils, found toys and casio keyboards. Before long, the creative musician became a cult figure in the Icelandic music scene and has been a source of inspiration for a whole generation of artists ever since. The film shows some of these internationally successful musicians like múm, Sin Fang, Hildur Gudnadóttir, or Mr. Silla guiding through the life of Grandma Lo-Fi.

Over a period of eight years, the directors Kristin Björk Kristjánsdóttir aka Kira Kira, Orri Jónsson
and Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir accompanied the musician and artist, capturing her creative powers as well as her special and warm-hearted character on mostly Super-8 and 16mm film. The result is an affectionate insight into the peculiar world of Grandma Lo-Fi, where broken-winged pigeons sing along to her tunes and where a cream whisk is tranformed into a helicopter. Animated sequences bridge the obscure space between the exemplary imagination and the delightfully everyday existence of Sigrídur Níelsdóttir.

„Grandma Lo-Fi: The Basement Tapes of Sigrídur Níelsdóttir“ celebrated its international premiere
at the Film Festival Rotterdam in January, won the renowned Sound & Vision Award at the Copenhagen DOX Festival, has recently been invited by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and is currently screened at numerous festivals world-wide. We are very happy to celebrate its German film premiere at UM:LAUT on 8 July at 6pm! After the film, we’ll have barbecue and drinks at the beautiful river terrace of Radialsystem, and to round out our special celebration of nordic sound and image we’ll have Kira Kira presenting her new album „Feathermagnetik“ at about 8pm with percussion wizard Samuli Kosminen and trumpeter Eiríkur Orri Ólafsson of múm as well as  special guest Greg Cohen playing the double bass. Yay!
