Tag "A Winged Victory For The Sullen"

We are very happy and proud to present two special nights within the Erased Tapes 5th Anniversary Tour at the mighty Radialsystem on 13 & 14 October! We’re looking forward to celebrating five years of fusing classical and electronic music with some of the label’s finest acts: Nils Frahm and A Winged Victory For The Sullen, who brought us a wonderful kick-off a year ago, as well as the renowned Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds and special guest Anne Müller.

Since its formation in 2007, Erased Tapes has become a meeting point and melting pot for innovative musicians. Deliberately positioned outside fleeting trends, the label has fostered and supported collaboration between artists who often fuse disparate musical forms and styles, rendering so-called genres like modern classical, post-rock and electronica redundant. We would love to congratulate one of our favourite labels and thank all the lovely people of the Erased Tapes family for five years of ambitious, distinctive and beautiful releases. Let’s celebrate!

We are especially delighted to welcome our dear friend Nils Frahm again. The works of the Berlin-based pianist and producer are characterised by high emotional density and a clearness of expression and form. After two internationally praised piano albums and his electronica project with Anne Müller, Nils Frahm presented his new album „Felt“ in the series of UM:LAUT at the sold out Radialsystem in late 2011. Numerous tours and concerts in Europe, Japan and the US, some of them alongside other artists such as Peter Broderick, Seabear, Hauschka, or his Icelandic label-mate Ólafur Arnalds, have strengthened his reputation as an exceptional instrumentalist and fascinating live musician.

Since the release of his debut album „Eulogy For Evolution“, the 24-year old Icelandic multi-instrumentalist and producer Ólafur Arnalds lures fans of indie music to his world of electronic, classically arranged chamber music. As one of the first artists on Erased Tapes, he has created music which sounds inviting, passionate and catchy at once, thereby making the often self-contained world of classical music more accessible to new listeners. As his most recent work, Arnalds has released the soundtrack for Sam Levinson’s debut film „Another Happy Day“, starring Ellen Barkin and Demi Moore. On 13 & 14 October, Ólafur Arnalds will be accompanied by a string trio.

Not least after his album „Lumière“ and his contribution to the soundtrack of  Sofia Coppola’s film „Marie Antoinette“, the American pianist and film music composer Dustin O’Halloran is mentioned in the same breath as Max Richter, Hauschka, Jóhann Jóhannsson and other renowned representatives of the „modern piano“. With A Winged Victory For The Sullen, O’Halloran’s dreamy piano sounds encounter the electronic soundscapes of the ambient musician and founder of  „Stars of the Lid“ Adam Wiltzie, making harmonical and melancholical sound formations between chamber music, ambient, minimal and neo-folk come into being.

„I’ve always been most interested in a dialogue between two opposite poles, between traditional and contemporary, between digital and analogue. That cliff between electronic and acoustic, the pop and the classical world.“ – that’s how Robert Raths, founder of  Erased Tapes, puts it and that’s why UM:LAUT is the perfect match to bring this special birthday party to Berlin.
We are very much looking forward to some great nights in October and would love to welcome you at Radialsystem.

You can now get your tickets online for 13 or 14 October here.

A Winged Victory For The Sullen

„This meditative and cinematic set is a victory for subtlety and sensitivity.“

Spiegel Online

Nils Frahm

„A wonderful, intimate and transportative new album from the German composer (…) a balm for troubled minds.“

„It is difficult to see how Nils Frahm and Erased Tapes Records could top this release, but for now ‚Felt‘ just about takes the crown of its predecessors and stakes a claim as being the most touching, affecting, and downright unmissable instrumental album of 2011“

„‚Felt‘ ist auf beeindruckende Weise selbstvergessen, ein graziles, an die filmischen Arbeiten der Quay Brothers erinnerndes mechanisches Menschmaschinen Wunderwerk.“

American composer Dustin O’Halloran specialises in sparse but beautifully melodic compositions that linger long after they’ve passed. The Berlin-based artist is a member of the band Devics, who were signed to Cocteau Twin Simon Raymonde’s Bella Union Records label, has released several piano albums under his own name, and is also developing an impressive reputation as a soundtrack composer. A Winged Victory For The Sullen is the first installment of the new collaboration between O’Halloran and Stars Of The Lid-founder Adam Wiltzie. The duo agreed to leave the comfort zone of their home studios and develop the recordings with the help of large acoustic spaces, hunting down a selection of 9ft grand pianos that had the ability to deliver extreme sonic low end. Besides O’Halloran’s piano playing and Wiltzie’s drone sounds, other traditional instrumentation was used including string quartet, French horn, and bassoon. Notable guest musicians on the record include Icelandic cellist Hildur Gudnadottir, as well as Erased Tapes label comrade Peter Broderick on violin. The recordings began with one late night session in the famed Grunewald Church in Berlin on a 1950s imperial Bösendorfer piano and strings were added in the historic East Berlin DDR radio studios by the River Spree – check out the video below. We are very happy to welcome Adam and Dustin at UM:LAUT on 21 November to present their self-titled debut at another large acoustic space accompanied by a string trio!

Berlin-based pianist Nils Frahm is already a firebrand in the modern classical world, collaborating with contemporaries such as Peter Broderick, Ólafur Arnalds and Anne Müller. Renowned pianist Dustin O’Halloran and Adam Wiltzie of Stars Of The Lid team up for A Winged Victory For The Sullen forming harmonic and melancholic soundscapes between chamber music, ambient and minimal. We are dead proud to present them together with our friends at Erased Tapes Records on 21 November in a special setting at one of the most beautiful venues in Beriln. What a start!
