What makes humans different from other beings? What influences us to empathise with others in certain situations? Inspired by the research of Simon Baron-Cohen („Zero Degrees of Empathy“), the London-based performance collective Neon Dance explores the human capacity of empathy in its latest production in musical and scenic form.

For the series of UM:LAUT, „Empathy“ will be realised for the first time as interdisciplinary live music version: In a set design created with light and laser technique, five dancers encounter an extraordinary ensemble consisting of the sound wizards Casper Clausen and Mads Brauer of Efterklang and Liima, the multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily from New York and the Icelandic cellist Gyða Valtýsdóttir of Múm.

Neon Dance is an interdisciplinary dance company from London which develops and realises productions for the stage as well as for film and other media. The company was founded in 2003 and is directed by the choreographer Adrienne Hart. The group regularly collaborates with artists from diverse disciplines. The dance production „Falling From Trees“, created in 2010 with music by the multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick, was presented at Glastonbury Festival, with Broderick’s soundtrack being successfully released through the label Erased Tapes. In collaboration with the duo SpringerParker from Berlin, Neon Dance developed the dance opera „There Are Places In Our Heads One Can Travel To“, which celebated its premiere in Norway at Barents Spektakel Festival. With „Archived’it“, the collective developed an interactive online project in 2012, which allows the users to rearrange their own version of the dance film „Dance on Steps“ from 1934 to a soundtrack by the Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds. Together with UM:LAUT, Neon Dance realised the unique live music version of the dance production „The Intention“ with the acclaimed pianist Nils Frahm and the cellist Anne Müller on the stage of Radialsystem V in 2013.

UM:LAUT partners

On two nights in December, dance, live music and video encounter each other to create an extraordinary audio-visual feast! UM:LAUT presents the premiere of „The Intention“, a multimedia production conceived by the innovative London based performance collective Neon Dance. Produced by British choreographer Adrienne Hart, Neon Dance have pulled together an exciting international team of collaborators including the amazing pianist and producer Nils Frahm and the cellist Anne Müller, set designers Nico de Rooij and Stuart Bailes as well as film maker Terry Braun. This will be the first time Nils Frahm and Anne Müller – critically acclaimed for their great collaborative record „7Fingers“ fusing electronica, chamber music and minimal refernces – perform as a duo in Germany.

Neon Dance has been critically acclaimed for its innovative work fusing dance, live music and new media. Adrienne Hart’s choregraphy „The Intention“ is inspired by the Argentinian author Adolfo Bioy Casraes‘ science fiction novel „The Invention of Morel“, which was published in 1940. The novel tells the story of a man who, on his escape from justice, arrives on a lonely island where he encounters machine-driven, human holograms – a work about deep love, identity and the dream of everlasting happiness, in which Casares already anticipated the virtually created worlds of the present.

After releasing the acclaimed debut album „7Fingers“ on Erased Tapes in 2010, Nils Frahm and Anne Müller have continued to develop their collaborative project between electronica, ambient, chamber music and minimal references while working on the soundtrack for „The Intention“. In unique sound experiments with classical and electronical elements, delicate melodies become interwoven with loops, glitches and samples. In the context of the series of UM:LAUT, the two musicians present their music for the first time live in Germany – embedded in the set design of and in combination with the premiere of Neon Dance’s new production „The Intention.“

We are very much looking forward to work with Adrienne Hart and the great people of Neon Dance and we are happy to present another exciting artistic dialogue between music, dance and video. Tickets for our two nights are now on sale – make sure to get yours. We would love to welcome you!

We are very happy and proud to present two special events in the series of UM:LAUT bringing together two of our favourite artists in Berlin: The internationally acclaimed pianist and composer Volker Bertelmann alias Hauschka meets the young Mozambican dancer Edivaldo Ernesto from the company of Sasha Waltz & Guests. In two nights, the two of them abandon the safety of composition and choreography, joining each other in an improvised interplay of sound and movement, entering an artistic dialogue without the corset of a predetermined course, open for unexpected developments, spontaneity and the impulses of each other. An encounter of two unique artists that can be experienced exclusively in the series of UM:LAUT on 17 and 18 August at Radialsystem!

UM:LAUT - Hauschka - Radialsystem - Prepared Piano - Berlin - Umlaut

Hauschka, who has recently recorded an album with the exceptional American violinist Hilary Hahn and composed music for the theatre installation „Puppen“ at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus and Döris Dörrie’s film „Glück“, is regarded as one of the most remarkable modern proponents of the prepared piano. With relatively simple means, he explores the tonal diversity of the keyboard instrument with metal pieces, foils and other objects placed inside the piano or attached to the strings. The resulting percussive or rustling sounds, which make one assume the usage of percussions and electronic devices, give the atmospherically dense, rhythm-based compositions a lyrical quality. Since his initial solo improvisations, the classically trained pianist has continually developed, recording some of his fourteen albums with other musicians as well as integrating electronic elements in his works. Meanwhile, Hauschka is mentioned alongside composers such as Eric Satie or John Cage as well as contemporary musicians like Max Richter, Yann Tiersen or Nils Frahm. It’s difficult to categorise Hauschka’s music as it moves between sound art and experimental, modern classical and chamber music, electronica and pop, with his last solo album broadening his spectrum to minimal techno and house. We never missed his great performances in Berlin in the last couple of years, and we are very pleased to get the chance to work him.

UM:LAUT - Berlin - Edivaldo Ernesto - Radialsystem - Umlaut

Edivaldo Ernesto has collaborated with numerous artists and choreographers like David Zambrano, Mat Voorter, Robert Hilton, or Faustin Linyekula after having received traditional and classical dance trainings in Mozambique. Sasha Waltz engaged him for the first time for her project „Dialoge Freiburg“ at e-Werk Freiburg in 2005. Since 2008 a constant member of the ensemble of Sasha Waltz & Guests, Edivaldo can be experienced in numerous productions of the company worldwide. With his unique and expressive style, he is considered one of the most remarkable and fascinating protagonists of the dance scene in Berlin. As his legendary duet with American percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky for the occasion of the 5th anniversary of Radialsystem illustrated, improvisation has remained his great passion. Together with the Cuban choreographer Judith Sánchez Ruíz, Edivaldo Ernesto has developed his project „There is a name for it“, premiering in Brussels in May 2013, as a director, sound designer and dancer. We love his style and expression as well as his winning and pleasant personality and are dead proud to present him in the context of UM:LAUT.

We are looking forward to a remarkable event in our little series and an exclusive and special get-together of two exceptional artists brought to you in cooperation with Annette Gentz Music Arts.

Tickets for the performances on 17 & 18 August are available now!
